Teenage Years: Coping with Acne

A common misconception is that only teenagers are prone to acne. This is utterly false because acne can appear in older people even those over 40. It is in fact a chronic problem for some.

Another misconception is that too much consumption of chocolate, dairy products and sweets can cause acne. In fact the only ingredient that worsens acne breakouts is iodine.

Three out of four teenagers are found to have acne. So most teenagers as well as having to undergo this extremely self-conscious stage of human life are also plagued with acne piples all over their faces. Because of this the majority of teenagers search for ways to cler up this skin disorder.

Many have tried to use cosmetics to cover the scars and the rough skin surface. Many acne infected teens look for creams that will mask their pimples. Image is a vital factor in societies especially for teens. If the image does not measure up they may suffer low self-esteem and significant mood swings, depression and eating disorders.

Most teens are often told not to eat oily foods and chocolates. However, there are still no tangible proofs that eating habits actually cause acne in teenagers. Yet, many dermatologists advise teenagers to refrain from caffeine, alcohol and nuts intakes for these might stimulate the oil glands in the skin. In fact, the only proven item that may aggravate acne breakouts is iodine.

Parents should help their teenage sons or daughters in coping with acne problems. Generally, acne infected individuals lose self-esteem for the fear of not being accepted by their peers.

To avoid damage to self-confidence among teens, it is advisable for parents to take their children to dermatologists as soon as an acne outbreak is spotted.

Fear for acne must not be reinforced by emphasizing myths about acne and associating acne with eating habits. It is also important that parents should address the proper needs and attention that these youngsters require. They must also be reminded that acne breakout is not usually permanent for most people.

Though acne cannot be totally eliminated, it can be treated to some degree.
